From shadows

Wheezing and limping, Nate made his way towards the Palm Tree. Could it actually be real? He hoped that the heat had not gotten to him and what he was seeing was simply an illusion of the worst kind. Hallucinations could only make his luck even more terrible. He drew closer and decided it had to exist. Nate thought for a moment of the possibilities the palm tree held: shade, a vantage point, and even better, coconuts! Nate licked his lips at the thought of smashing a coconut against the trunk of the tree and drinking the life sustaining liquid inside. The friction of his dry tongue on his cracked lips made him wince in pain, but the was rapidly overshadowed by the sharp pain in his leg and stomach every time he took a step.

As Nate approached the area he saw someone else.... a girl. She was looking into some kind of bush in the area around the tree. Nate focused on her face, trying to see through his dirt covered lenses. Then it hit him: Anima! The girl from District 9 he had met back in training. Nate became worried. This girl seemed dangerous. She had no ties to anyone and, from what he had seen on the battlefield, would kill anyone! Nate thought for a moment and decided it was either take his chances in the desert or take his chances with the girl. At least if she killed him it would hopefully be quick. Nate's voice barely escaped his mouth. "Hey..."

Nate had got her attention. Sadly, this wasn't the best of times. Out of the bush came a small snake that latched itself onto Anima's arm. Nate froze for a moment and watched as she battled with it and then came down on it with her shield. Nate wasn't quite sure what to do. While keeping his eye on the snake (just in case) he took a step towards Anima, who was trying to suck the poison from her arm.

He thought for a second and then spoke again. "Do you have any first aid? I could help you bandage up your bite." It was a long shot, but maybe if he could help her, she would return the favor. They could always part after, no harm, no foul. Or, she could even reject him and not want his help. But without any other options this was Nate's best choice.

Jared had made it away from the rhinos...finally. He came to a place with palm trees and carefully went in. He thought he heard others there, so he carefully crept around. He hid behind every tree there was, making sure to check over his shoulder and around him for pursuers. He also checked the ground for signs of a mutt...he didn't need to deal with any more of those. He used all his experience from stalking people in District 11. He already had his sword out, but he held it so that he made as little noise as possible. When he finally saw people, he noticed the boy he had fought before...and the really dangerous looking chick from District 9. He stayed silent and looked at what they were fighting...it looked like a snake. His eyes quickly scanned the ground again, but he was careful not to panic and make noise. He sighed as he watched, also being aware of his surroundings...ready to dodge an attack or give on himself.

Nate watched as the snake fled, feeling lucky that he had avoided another attack. He wiped the sweat from his brow and paused. Then he remembered something. The snake had briefly focused on an area behind him before it left. It could be chance, but in the games you couldn't leave any stone unturned. Nate turned and saw a familiar face. Jared had found him. He didn't know if it was a coincidence or skill, but either way Nate didn't want to deal with him again if he could avoid it. He grabbed the truck of the palm tree and scurried up to the top in hopes of avoiding danger.

Jared rolls his eyes. "I...am sick and tired of things charging at me!" He rolls to his left, hoping to dodge the attack. "First rhinos, and now a girl with a shield. Why can't I run into friends for once..." He sighs and runs towards her, and swings his sword at her. He hoped Preston was following close by...he would need the support. He looked around, but didn't see any sign of Preston. He would have to make do without him for now. After he attacked, he backed away, so that the District 6 boy in the tree was in the corner of his sight.

He rolls again, this time back and he rushes forward right after her swing to stab her. "You see, once you have friends, you have trust. And once you have their trust, they make easy prey. Friends are also the key to success in the games. Whether they're sponsors or tributes willing to die for you." Jared smirks prepares himself for another attack.

Nate watched from high above while the two battled each other. He wasn't sure who to root for. On one hand, he wanted to see Jared gone. He had tried to kill Nate once before, so the likelihood that it would happen again was high. On the other hand Anima could be dangerous. She could take Nate out just to dispatch of anyone who knew where she had last been seen. The tension was mounting. Nate leaned forward to see more, but his hand slipped and he tumbled out of the tree landing with a hard THUD against the ground.
