DISTRICT    TEN
Heart racing, palms sweating, today was Reaping Day. I was lucky enough to have a nice dress for the occasion. I wore a floral dress that hung down just above my knees and cinched in at the waist. My father had told me that I looked beautiful, but all I could think was that it was the itchiest fabric I'd ever felt. Maybe that made me selfish. I should have been grateful to have something nice to wear, but instead I stood there itching. My shoes certainly didn't help. My toes were squeezed into confining cream and beige flats. I was sure that my heel was going to have blisters after just a few minutes of wearing them. My hair was the only thing I didn't mind. I had tied it back into a bun, which kept my neck cool. I was glad for my decision to put my dark hair back since when I was nervous I always messed with it. And boy, was I nervous.

The District Ten escort was unbearable. God only knows how she managed to stay cheery with that many solemn faces staring up at her. Most of the children of District Ten wouldn't stand a chance in the Games. They'd be dead after the first day. All I could do was hope that it wasn't my name that would be chosen, or, even worse, one of my friends. The escort welcomed everyone and, after some polite applause, raised a perfectly manicured hand. Then she plunged her hand into the glass bowl, which was filled with names. But the name that she retrieved wasn't mine, it was Annie Gallagher's. This was worse than me being chosen. This was one of my friends. Maybe I didn't stand a chance in the Games, but at least I could die doing something noble.

I took a shaky breath and stepped forward. "I volunteer."

* James Fawcett
»
directory.thg/david_switch
ALL I KNOW IS THAT WE SAID HELLO
Name: James Fawcett
James woke up slowly, and hoping that he was dead. Nope, he wasn't. James groaned and slowly got up from his bed, he wasn't happy. Today was the day that decided Catelyn's death, and maybe even his own. He showered, ate, and walked towards the reaping. He watched as the escort walked up onto the stage and he eyed her suspiciously, like if she had a gun and he was unsure if she was going to open fire. She called the name 'Annie Gallaghner' and a person volunteered, Just like Catelyn.. James thought in his head with a sigh. He then heard the other name, that he doubted was real. "James Fawcett" The escort called, a couple girls gasped, Catelyn's mom started to cry. James walked up and stood there, he swore he was going to cry. Why? Just WHY him? Why not someone ELSE? He started to hope some hopeless kid volunteered for him because he didn't want to die like Catelyn, he hoped that he didn't.

Derald leaned back against the wall on stage, folding his arms. It's been awhile since they made him a wear suit, why is this classy again? He scanned across the sea of people that looked dead, terrified, suicidal. They have it all. It was that time again. Once more time to try and keep someone alive as long as he can. He chuckled silently to himself, he felt like a trainee surgeon failing on his patients and keeps saying Let me try again. Not that he wants to try again but, you get the point. His eyes lingered as they scanned, stopping to one face only and he smiled, pulling out a peace sign from his folded arms before dropping them back in place, in case any peacekeepers didn't like that. Elia, their escort, went on and on and on about all these honour and worthiness and peace and Derald just started to have a silent conversation with Annie. But when Elia turned around and gave him a cold glare, he shrugged apologetically and went back to standing there like a display.

But even though all her patriotic words flew past him, there was one that stung him hard. He didn't hear it right? He was imagining that right? It was suppose to be her last year, and they were gonna celebrate after this. Maybe they'll get to pop a champaign or two in the train for irony. But his ears weren't playing tricks at all when everyone turned to the girl he had been staring at all Reapings. That made him pushed himself off the wall he was leaning against. Seeing her walk up to them, must've been one of the worst feelings ever. Not the worst, but it's high up there, and if she continues her way up, that feeling ain't gonna compare to what's gonna come for the next two months. Derald left his spot and jumped off the stage withstyle#yolo and ran up towards Annie, giving her a strong hug, "You're gonna be okay, alright? Just keep that head held high.. and you're gonna be okay." He whispered to reassure her. To reassure him. But the peacekeepers were already up to pull him back on stage. "Alright alright Jerry ya don't hafta push," He chuckled to the one he recognised, pushing himself up stage from the front and readjusted his suit. Taking back his old place at the back. Just he turned to face the crowd another girl's voice came about. And the sweet, most stupid words came out. I volunteer. Why. Every single year, every time he was up that stage, he'd hear that. Those stupid words, but as suicidal as they are, he still have to do everything he can to keep them alive. He glanced back to Annie who made it halfway towards the stage, giving her a faltering grin, mouthing the words, Told ya. It was the same every year, and this year, it had to. He was banking on it to help him keep someone close to him. And as it proven, it's the same as every freaking year.

Derald was selfish, almost happy that Annie was out. But sometimes he forget that another life was being put out there. There was never a win win situation on this, but he stood and watched Annie say goodbye to a friend. When the new girl walked up and introduced herself, her name didn't ring a bell. Maybe Annie never mentioned her, maybe they actually never met before. But Derald still felt selfish to be thankful for such words. When the boy's name was called out, it was a little more silent. No one dared raise their hand. No one dared to risk their life for someone they didn't know. And it brought back memories of his own reapings. Derald stared at the boy, scared and unsure, and maybe some idiot would just raise his hand and recklessly go for a suicide mission. When the people started to disperse Elia began lecturing him on his behaviour and all that and he glanced to the side, waving goodbye to Annie. He doubt he'll get a chance to get off this place before heading off so might as well take a second to say bye.

DISTRICT    TEN
As soon as I said those words, I could feel and see something change in Annie. I felt strong arms wrap me in a tight embrace. I didn't hug back. If I hugged back, I would cry, and if I cried they would think I was weak. So I stood there, with this girl's arms around me, choking back the sob awaiting me in my throat. Annie began to ramble on about how she was thankful and I was going to be okay but I didn't listen. I wasn't stupid. She was just trying to make me feel better, and that was okay. I gave her a tight-lipped smile that didn't quite reach my eyes and did everything I could to pretend I hadn't seen my mentor grin.

As soon as I had said those words, those words which were equivalent to that of a suicide note, he had grinned at Annie. It was common knowledge Annie and the mentor, Derald Hafer, were close. And yet I hadn't thought that he would be so blatant about his happiness. I supposed I couldn't blame him. If it were me in his shoes, I probably would've smiled too. So instead of saying anything or reacting I just told Annie thanks and went up to the stage.

Everything was a blur from then on. Shaking hands with the boy, who I didn't recognize but whose face would probably end up burned in my memory if I survived, went quickly and I almost didn't realize when everything was over. But then it was. And I let out a a tear or two and then quickly wiped them away. I replaced them with a stoic expression. I wouldn't give the boy by my side who may end my life the satisfaction of my tears.

ooc; I already made the train topic(oops) but I'm posting here again anyway because I'm a rebel Razz
