A letter seem to find its way to the Gallaghers. Strange, since people don't actually get letters around this district. But this was neatly put in a simple envelope addressed to Annie.

Dear Annie,

Hey there, so uh. Games ain't gonna end too soon, I reckon. And since there's a pen and paper and people to bribe I thought I just talk to ya, and tell ya what's going on around this crazies land. Hopefully this gets to ya soon. I'm doing okay around here, the weird people never stop being weird! But I'm trying my damndest to get sponsors. Dane's still alive and kicking (I know ya don't watch the Games) and maybe... y'know, I could still do something for him. Yeah, that's just an update around Capitol. How are ya though? Hope you're doing a-okay, sorry I can't be there for ya but hey, you can go crazy and totally trash my room! ..Yeah I miss ya a whole bunch, but you already know that. If yer ain't feeling too good please tell someone 'kay? Tess would help, that's fer sure. And uh, could ya help me check up on Dusk? And the horses. And.. Oh nevermind, I'll just hope they're good. Anyways, take care of yerself aight? I'll be back before we know it! And uh, maybe not too soon. Dane's still got a whole lot of steam left in him. I'll do my best to get him back home too. I love you, don't burn a barn down!

PS. If ya catch the train operator, Joel, he outta be able to bring a letter back.
PSS. Don't forget to drink lotsa water, the med box is under my bed if ya need it.

Derald

Joel the train man soon found himself with a young woman chasing after him who fit that Derald kid's general description. He was annoyed at first, but then he realized she was pregnant, and felt obliged to send her letter. Besides, he was on his way anyway. The letter was dropped off outside of the District 10 Mentor room in the Capitol, stamped on the front with a black paw print from a dog.

Dear Derald,

Hi! You don't have to feel uncomfortable about writing to me, you know that, so know need for the sheepishness. Or continue. It's cute. Anyway, it does appear to be a long games, but that's a good thing, right? Hopefully Dane will stay alive and kicking, and if there's anything you can do to help I'm sure you'll try your best. I have faith in him, and I'm sure everyone back home would want him to know that we support him! Well, maybe not some fathers with attractive teenage daughters, but ya know. Don't worry about being here for me, just do whatever you need to do to keep yourself sane and if possible, the tributes alive. That's not on you, though. If you can help 'em, great, if not it was never your responsibility. Remember that. I'm just fine over here. Been visiting Tess a lot, and I did have to admit to my parents that I'm pregnant, but they were happy to see you proposed, and without even knowing about it. We decided not to tell Aunt Jemima and just hide the baby whenever she visits. Tess has been letting me use the kitchen and I've been experimenting in my free time- pregnancy cravings and boredom, I guess. I just give the extras out around the district. Feels kind of weird baking for sport when people are starving, but what can you do? I guess buying flour from them helps? I dunno, wish I could do more. I did discover a great cookie recipe. I'll make them for you when you get home. Dusk is good. She misses you, of course, but she's been okay, though she howls at night sometimes. I do think she and I are bonding. (Finally! Yes! She wasn't even that reluctant to let me dip her paw in ink for this letter. I washed it off afterwards, don't worry.) The horses are a little jittery, but from what I can tell, they're fine. Tess takes great care of them. I was helping with your chores for a while, but Tess stopped letting me when she found out I was pregnant, hence the boredom and the cookies. The corgis slept in an old sweater of yours the other day when I brought them over to your house, so I think they miss you too, but they have short attention spans so I doubt they'll dwell on it. I'm taking it pretty easy and keeping careful notes of belly size so you can see the change when you come back. It's really weird. Mornings suck, but most of the time I just feel normal. Except there's a person inside me, which is weird. Our person. You can tell, now, just from looking at me. I had to mess with a lot of my clothes, but it's good to have stuff to do. I'm a bit restless. Yes, Dane has always been rather steamy (ha ha), and he's a strong person. He's probably seduced at least half of the tributes by now into not killing them. There's something missing here without him, I guess. I don't know. Maybe it's just hormones, but I've been thinking a lot about life and time and stuff. Weird, like I said, but not bad. I'm doing pretty well. I miss you, though. Obviously. It was really good to hear from you. I tracked Joel down and I hope this gets to you. I'll try not to burn down too many barns, but no promises. I'm drinking plenty of water, no worries. I've helped more animals with pregnancy than I can count. I got this. I love you. Hope to see you soon!! XOXO. Stay strong.

P.S. I feel like it's a boy. I don't know how, I just feel like it is. Did I tell you that already? I can't remember. Pregnancy brain. You know how it is. Well, you don't. But yeah.

P.P.S. Where do you stand on muffins? I need more stuff to bake.

Love, Annie

PostSubject: Re: Letters for Home   Sun Dec 21, 2014 1:28 am

Another letter came by a few days later, who knew that the trains actually frequent to and fro so often.

Hey Annie,

I ain't uncomfortable at all! It's just, weird... to be writing. Like we never really write much back in 10 y'know? (trust me not even in school!) But I just kinda really wanted to talk to someone. And.. what better person to talk to then my fiancee, right? Note to self: never look back at what ya write, it's embarrassing. Okay fine, at least ya get to continue to tell me how "cute" this is. Mm, I'll try and get the message across to Dane, if that's even possible. I mean, c'mon, what's wrong with these Capitol people? Who wouldn't wanna sponsor for Dane? Any ideas on how to butter up them weirdos? Aw, fathers like your own? Though I reckon that Dane won't be the Ten-er he'd worry about coming back home! ..Yeah, sanity ain't prolly easy to come by seeing that I'm writing this in the middle of the night on the bed. Thank you, your words are what keeps me sane these day, really. I'll prolly read your letter over and over again til I get your next one. I know right? Such a romantic, this one! Aw man, I was supposed to be there to tell your parents together, I'm sorry I had to leave so early... Heh, your Aunt is a whole different ball game, our crane story would totally work. Ha! Who would've thought you'd have too much time, I should make some entertainment for ya or something. But hey, baking is still really nice, I'll help ya give them out next time when I'm back. Though I get first dibs on the first batch of cookies. And Dusk finally growing on you? That's awesome, I'm sure she's still just sulking over getting a divorce with me, and maybe she got the sense that you'll be sticking around the house for a long, long time. It's good to hear about them, and you, after so many weeks. ..I hope it isn't in my favourite sweater, please tell me it ain't in my favourite sweater. Thanks, I really can't wait to get back home, as selfish as that may sound, sorry Games, just to see y'all again. Nice to know you're taking it easy and everything and I heard that the first few months ain't too bad usually, and hopefully I'll be back with ya after. And here's a good tip, don't wake up in the mornings! Bam! Mornings are never any good. Can't imagine how it'd feel for you, even though you don't really hate the mornings as much as I do. Hey, I could give ya something to do! Have some entertaining riddles to past time! Oh, Dane. Pity it seems like the closest thing he'd ever seduce right now is a glob of mutt. The Gamemakers are definitely going to have to push people for more action, you can actually here the complaints if you walk down the streets in the Capitol.. Totally off topic but I wish I could kidnap more food back for you to try. Do you know what a froyo is? That's really cool actually! Alright well, it's almost dawn, should really get outta bed and back to mingling for the Games, sometimes I think I need a mentor for being a mentor. Sigh! I'll write to you soon again, and a boy? Really? Well, never doubt a mother's instinct, right? I'll give you first dibs on names since you're the one really dealing with him for 9 months. I miss you and love you, and it's awesome getting word back from you, I'll buy Joel lunch or something for all the hassle, I'm sure we're prolly like two annoying children passing classroom notes at each other and Joel's the guy that sits in the middle. Pfft. Thank you, and you too, stay strong and please please take care!

PS: I dunno, brownies? More chocolate is always good! Whatever it is, I'm lookin' forward to it!
PSS: Oh yeah, here! Have a riddle of the letter!

What can move on paper and pen,
but stays still?

Derald

Joel sighed as he dropped another letter down at the Capitol mail office, grumbling about kids these days and how it really wasn't his job to do this.

Dear Derald,
Yeah, I guess writing's weird. Kind of good weird, though, I think. Better than nothing, certainly. I don't know why we never tried this in previous years. I don't know why people won't sponsor Dane. If he can get girls to like him, he should be able to get sponsors. He's a charming fellow. I'm surprised. I don't think my father's ever met Dane, but no, he probably wouldn't like him. He doesn't mind you, but there's a big difference between you and Dane. You're too kind, honestly. I'm just rambling on, but that's very sweet. I've decided to keep yours in a box. Read 'em whenever I start to feel down. Also, I read them to my stomach, which I'm sure looked super weird, but there you go. Don't worry, it's probably better for you that you weren't there when I told them. it was supremely awkward at first. Sorry, though, I know you wanted to be. I'll make you lots of cookies as an apology, hm? I think I'm actually getting rather not terrible. Exciting. Yes, of course, Dusk is a sweetie. I just worry she doesn't like me very much, that's all, but I think we're okay. Yes, divorces are hard, honey, but if I could be there for you I'm certan I can be there for her. Funny, interspecies relation counsellor was not what I used to reply with when people asked 'so what do you want to be when you grow up?'. Hah. I shouldn't joke; I'm terrible at it. It is indeed your favorite sweater, since you wear it the most, and it reminds her of you, I guess. I think it is, anyway. The blue one? Fuzzy? Anyway, it's not selfish to want to go back home. It's human, and if you weren't human, I wouldn't be an interspecies relationship counsellor or whatever, now would I? Unless you were still a different species... nevermind. The point is, of course you want to come home. Not your fault you got whisked off to the city of crazy, flashing, artificial lights. True, taking it easy is kind of amazing and perfect and how do working people live? I dunno, I'm getting very lazy. Not a good habit, but it's sure fun. Eventually I'll, you know, do stuff. Even in the morning. Just not right now. Hmm, I'll ask Tess if she has any riddles. Wait, I thought Dane was with that cute blonde girl! Is she still there? She was gorgeous. These are a slow games, though. I wonder if it's better that way, you know, for the parents? Sorry, sad thoughts go away, happy thoughts, happy thoughts. Letters. Okay. Um, yes! I don't know, I just feel it. Well, I liked your suggestion, and it works either way. Little Alex Hafer. Or Hafer-Gallagher, but that sounds weird. Alex Hafer is cuter. Ooh, I'm excited. Well, not for the birth. For the part after. I miss you and love you too, and I'll give Joel some cookies or something. He's probably so frustrated. Jeez, I wonder if he reads them? Oh well. No problem, thanks to you too, and I absolutely will!

P.S. Hmm, will do.

P.P.S. I have no idea! Honestly! It's killing me. I've scoured my brain, Tess's brain, almost asked my family but decided against it. A stamp? A word? Ink? Corners? Name?Trashcan? Elephant? A letter? Writing? Sure the answer's not Derald? I'll figure it out. Even if I have to post papers all over the town asking people. Or just tell me when you get back. Smile

Love, Annie

Derald snuck back round to the train station to meet Joel once again, handing him another letter and a whole pack of capitol for Joel as thanks. And to appease his grumpiness.

Dear Annie,

Hey there again, guess the past Games went by really quickly and I didn't really have much time, y'know? This one's been a bit too long away from home to my liking. But hey, it's always been a good kinda weird between us! Yeah, this is a problem, we've been gnawing our fingers when all of Dane's friends got chewed up. Hmm, should I go butter up the Capitol ladies? Maybe if I play up a bit of Dane style I could get him a med kit, or at least some bread. Ha! Or maybe not.. Your old man's a nice guy, really. But i'll have ya know that we were once really good pals! I use to be his wingman in the good ol teenage days. I just stand there and he do all the talking! It was.. kinda fun. Who knows maybe Dane could smooth his way into your cousin's heart and get your dad to like him if he doesn't. Nah, I'm sure you ain't weird, I think that's adorable of you. ..These words are for you, they ain't for the little one.. Uh, hey there lil guy! Ignore whatever your mama told ya. Treat her well 'kay? I know that some mamas have a hard time but be nice! I'll be back real soon to see ya both. Um, yeah that's all for the lil' one. But I'm great with awkward! I'll just be there to blend into the awkward. Yep. Hmm, HMMMMM alright, you're forgiven, I'd like more chocolate please. Maybe I should smuggle some chocolate back from here, make it worth while. Or is it just your taste buds putting you in denial? Ha! Can't wait to come back and test them out myself. Oh Dusk likes ya, she likes ya a lot. She' just doesn't like the fact that we're spending most of our time together. Dusk that girl really likes to meet new people, run round the market and stuff so she's prolly just getting a bit restless, I'll work on taking her for a walk down the Upper District when I'm back (Don't ya dare do it for me while I'm gone, she's quite the tugger and runner!). Man, I have a whole lot of things I wanna get done when I'm back, don't I? Though I'm sure she'd love some of your counselling, if you can speak dog, I'll help ya translate it all! Ha. Hahahaha, yeah you're kinda bad at jokes, trust me. Takes a bad joker to know a bad joker. Sigh, why is it always the sweaters? All the dogs seem to be attracted to sweaters, as long as it's still intact, it's still gonna be a couple more cold days. Yeah you make a point, doesn't mean I hafta like how I feel. Speaking of sweater weather, is it really cold there? Hope you're keeping warm and all, burn off some of the wood if ya have to, we can always go get more next time. It's pretty chilly around here too (should've totally brought my favourite sweater), but they have like, weird contraptions that give off heat. What?! Well I ain't gonna question it as long as it's keeping us warm. Alright, you just take a break from all the work, when I'm back I'll throw ya into the barn to get ya back to work, that sounds nice dunnit? Hmmm, do you mean Fleur? Well, that's the only pretty blonde who knows Dane that I know. Right now could really be any blonde girl around the district. But yeah I knew Fleur, we were once.. really close friends. Ha, my suggestion that I don't even remember making, that's kinda sad actually. Alex. I like it too. Heh, not for the birth? Well just you know that once I'm back, I'll be there with ya every step of the way, kay? Joel can read these all he likes! We got nothing to hide, right? Unless.. there was that smuggling part.. ahem.

P.S Nope nope nope nope nope! I'll let ya rack your brains a little more! It's fun seeing you like this!

P.S.S Oh right! And well, I don't know when this will get to you, but Merry Christmas. Once again, I can't be there with ya'll but here's a gift, don't be mad at me? I thought I could make you a new bracelet and all. I'd grab some raspberries for ya but I doubt they ever pass clearance back home. Hope you have a good Christmas with your family and lil' junior there! Don't worry bout me here, got the guys and the drunks for company.

I love you,
Derald
