District 9 Reapings!

The District 9 escort steps up on stage and smiles with blindingly white teeth. She starts speaking in a high pitched voice, "Welcome everyone to the Reapings! Today one young man and woman will be chosen to participate in the 28th Annual Hunger Games!" She steps up to the big bowls containing the names of every child in the district, from 12 to 18. Her hands hover above the bowls for a second, as if deciding something. "Now then, Ladies first!" she says, and reaches into the bowl filled with girls names...

Azalea stood in the crowd with the other girls. Her younger sister, Heather, was somewhere wear the younger siblings and parents stood because she was still to young. On the other side, was Her older brother. Azalea wanted to be with him, because she was scared. She didn't want to be reaped.

Rosie shivered as she approached the Reapings. She wasn't cold, she was just nervous. If Scarlett gets called, nobody will be there to take care of Olive. If I get called... I don't know. It was hard for her to think, what with all the reminders of her brother's death screaming her in the face. She held back memories from the day of the day he was reaped, the day of his suicide, the day the Games had taken her brother from her family before the countdown even began.

Rosie forced herself to worry about Scarlett, instead. Worrying about the future was a little more comforting than reminiscing about the past, because at least, in the future, there were possibilities. Things that could be different. In the past, anything that was done was done. She looked around for Scarlett, trying to place her face in the crowd. There were a couple people she knew, and she saw Azalea somewhere off in the distant, but she didn't know where Scarlett was and it scared her. If something's happened to Olive... she thought, nearly frantic.

Scarlett walked slowly up to the reapings, carrying baby Olive in her arms.
What would happen to Olive if I got chosen for the hunger games? Who would take care of her? She surveyed the area, looking for Rosie. She knew that Rosie was probably freaking out right now, considering what happened with her brother at the reapings.

There she was, standing in the middle of the crowd, eyes closed. Scarlett walked up to her and gave her a hug. "How are you doing? Do you want to hold hands?"

When she saw Scarlett, Rosie's face lit up. "Oh my god, I was looking for you! Is Olive okay- oh! Hi Olive!" she said, noticing the baby in Scarlett's arms. She hugged her friend back, but shook her head at Scarlett's question. "I'm okay, thanks." She smiled at Olive, tickling her belly, and pulled Scarlett up to the front. "Hey, you know if you get picked I'll take care of Olive, right? But if you do, you have to come back for her. Okay?"

Rosie froze. She put her hand on Scarlett's shoulder and forced herself to take a step forward. Not again... she thought. But nobody's going to volunteer for me this time... Her eyes flicked back and forth over the area, hoping against hope for something she knew would never happen. She kissed Olive on the head, hugged Scarlett again, and made her way up to the stage, trying not to freak out.

Roxy Kreese - District Nine - 12 Years Old

I was nervous, but I knew that my family didn't have alot of money, and they needed a victor. I sighed and raised my hand. "I volunteer!" I smiled. I was worried about the Games, but right now, I felt great. I was on top of the world. I did the right thing. I thought. I looked at Rosie. She probably wouldn't have lasted very long anyway. (No offence.)

Rosie thanked the little girl with red hair. "You have no idea what this means to me. I was picked last year, too, and someone volunteered. My brother killed himself when he got reaped. Thank you, thank you so much. Good luck," she whispered to her, then scampered away from the stage. Those few moments had hurt a lot, but she was ready to face the world again.
