The District escort steps up on stage and smiles with blindingly white teeth. She starts speaking in a high pitched voice, "Welcome everyone to the Reapings! Today one young man and woman will be chosen to participate in the 27th Annual Hunger Games!" She steps up to the big bowls containing the names of every child in the district, from 12 to 18. Her hands hover above the bowls for a second, as if deciding something. "Now then, Ladies first!" she says, and reaches into the bowl filled with girls names...

Dove was ready. She was wearing her mothers blowse and skirt. Dove was slightly afraid of becoming a tribute, but at the same time she was confident. After all, whenever Dove had some spare time she had practiced for this. She didn't want to be a peice of the Capitols game. If she ended up in the games, she was going to try to win.

.:With a snatch of a paper among thousands, the small envelope was pulled from the big glass bowl. With a deadly taught silence the escort returned to the microphone. A scratch of opening paper, and the escort cleared their voice

"Dove Jones" they called.

.:The silence deflated like a balloon. "Now for the boys." Repeating the same process the escort loudly said into the microphone

"Fritz Notson"

.:The two tributes had been chosen for slaughter, all that would be left would be to cart them off for their grand appearance in the Capitol. "Now then, are there any volunteers?" The escort asked as their two tributes joined them on stage.

I heard them call Dove Jones's name. I didn't know the girl personally, but she was still a friend of mine in school. I pressed down my grey dress and walked out into the aisle between the boys and girls. "I volunteer!" I yelled out, making sure that the Peacekeepers could see and hear me.

I stood there, frozen with fear. Did they really call my name? Then I saw my answer. Lyra and Beanie were crying. I walked slowly up onto the stage, and saw my two sisters hugging. Who will provide now? I wonder.

Marnie looked at the boy she would have to go up against. She walked to the stage and looked at him even closer. All she was telling herself was, 'Don't develop a relationship.' No friendship, nothing more. It'll be harder to see him die... or even kill him.

I put a charming look on my face, as my angle. I knew if I acted like a heartbreaker, I might have a chance. The capitol eats that stuff up. I looked at Beanie and Lyra. I had to say goodbye.

"What are we going to do without you?" Beanie asked.
"Promise me you'll do well. Stay with Lyra, and do what she says. You'll manage. You're tough." I said.
Lyra let a few tears fall. "Oh, Fritz. First dad, then mom, now you...Please...Don't leave us."
"I have to" I explain. "Just ...don't leave Beanie. Work hard. It'll be tough, but I know you're recourcefull."
After they had to leave, I left for the train. There was no one in the world that I loved after them.

Marnie looked down at Fenner, as he ran to Marnie and gave her a hug. He hugged her and didn't let go.
"Don't leave me!"
Marnie rubbed his hair. This strong little boy from District 11 was actually crying. Marnie's mother came next and gave her a humongous hug. They stood that way for a while.
"Don't leave me Marnie, not like your father," she whispered.

Marnie walked to the train with the boy, and smiled, holding out her hand. "I'm Marnie. You're Fritz, right?" she asked, cautiously.

"Yeah." I smiled. "So...Marnie"I said using the name that I thought was hers."Are you thrilled for the games? Going to miss anyone in particular?" I asked, imitating Ceasar

Marnie looked down at the ground as they walked. The boy had hit a soft spot in Marnie that could make her vulnerable to anything. She looked over at him, and there was grief and despair in her eyes. "My brother. He's only 10, and my mother may not be able to take care of him without me," she said. Marnie rolled her token around and around in her hand, beautiful yellow topaz necklace that her mother had gotten all the way from District 1. Her mother wore it on her wedding day.

"I'm going to miss my sisters." I said mournfully. "We are..." I paused and lowered my voice. "Orphans. I don't know if my 14 year old sister can provide for herself not to mention my 8 year old sister..."
