The Reapings

The District 1 escort, Perspicasia Tinklefluff, steps up on stage and smiles with blindingly white teeth. She starts speaking in a high pitched voice, "Welcome everyone to the Reapings! Today one young man and woman will be chosen to participate in the 30th Annual Hunger Games!" She steps up to the big bowls containing the names of every child in the district, from 12 to 18. Her hands hover above the bowls for a second, as if deciding something. "Now then, Ladies first!" she says, and reaches into the bowl filled with girls names...

Leonidas was ready and pumped for this years reaping. He would not volunteer if he was not chosen, maybe another year, but he surely wanted to be selected as the male tribute of district 1. The girls went and he did not pay any attention to it, he did not really care who the female was going to be. Then the moment of truth came and Perspicasia Tinklefluff reached into the bowl that held the names of all of the males that were eligible for the games. She drew the card out and announced, "Leonidas Omirou."

He grinned as he heard his name and even went to shake the hands of the kids that were beside him. He made his way up to the stage as they asked if there were any volunteers to take his place. Someone spoke up and said that they were going to volunteer for him in his place. "What the hell", he thought to himself angrily, "This is complete crap." He searched for the kid to try and find out who stole his time in the spotlight when he finally saw him approaching him. "Oh it's you", he said to the boy. He gritted his teeth and headed back to his spot in the crowd as he said, "May the odds be ever in your favor."
