Hiding and Hoping

Jett stopped running after she couldn't see the cornucopia. It had been a long uphill run, but her feet had pulled through. The tribute then collapsed and looked at her backpack, wondering if she should open it. She decided to wait until she had Pyrite with her.

The girl sat down for a few sections, before hearing a rustle among the plants. Was it a monster, a career? She grabbed her knife from her backpack and scanned the area around her. Was it early enough in the games to die? No, not without a fight.

Pyrite burst out of the bushes, an axe in either hand. One of them had a little blood on the edge, but not a lot. He smiled at seeing Jett and took the blanket off his shoulder.

"Look what I brought you!"

He smiled as he said it, more out of the fact they were both alive than that he had brought her a blanket. The arena could throw them some cold nights, and it'd be a good thing to have. He kept one axe in his hand, but slipped the handle of the other in the inside of his trousers with the blade sideways so it couldn't hurt anyone. He noticed Jett didn't put her knife away though. Not a bad idea to keep it out, you never know who could be hiding.

Suddenly, a rainbow butterfly float down and alights on Jett's shoulder. It seems perfectly innocent. After a few moments of holding still, it leads the two tributes towards a small parcel on the ground that looks harmless and is begging to be opened.

Jett exhaled as she saw it was only Pyrite. She gave him a small smile and got up to her feet. She looked at the blanket and smiled. Who knew how cold it could get at night around here. The tribute thought it was very useful. "Gee, thanks," Jett said with a smile, running a hand over the blanket. It felt more like a windbreaker, but she couldn't be sure.

She was about to say something when a butterfly landed on her shoulder. Jett's green eyes reflected the butterfly's wings. She didn't want to hurt it, but was hesitant to follow it. What if it turned into a fire-breathing rainbow butterfly of doom? Strange thought, but you couldn't ever know in the hunger games. Yet, Jett felt like she wanted to follow it. Her sense of adventure hadn't left her yet. "Let's go," she said, grabbing Pyrite's hand.

Her knife was still in her hand, and she thought it was best that way. The butterfly had lead them to a parcel, which was opening. Jett felt her nerves kicking in, and she was wondering if it had been a good idea to follow the butterfly in the first place.

He waited for a moment before noticing the package the butterfly had led him to. It seemed innocent enough. But then, could anything be trusted? Everything around looked innocent, but somewhere there were a good dozen-and-a-bit other teenagers trying to hunt them down. He drew his other axe in preparation and gave it a gentle nudge with his right foot before taking to it with an axe. He carefully slit open the top of the package before taking two big steps back, awaiting a reaction from it.

The package opens up, and the butterfly flies away to some flowers. Inside the parcel is a small cake that says 'eat me' and a bottle of swirling pink, spring green, and cyan liquid that says 'drink me.'

Pyrite laughed a little at the cake and liquid. He almost wanted to eat it, but knew it was likely poisoned. He had a picnic basket anyway. Why would he need cake? He turned to Jett, signalling that they should leave.

"This is beyond stupid. We need to go before anything else happens."

He turned away, completely ready to go and leave the cake for anyone dumb enough to eat it. He quickly remembered his own picnic basket, opening it up to check the contents. Hopefully there would be some food in there. He couldn't just live off three apples.

Jett hadn't realized that she was holding her breath. She was so scared that the parcel would reveal a monster. When it was just cake and some interesting colored liquids, it relieved her. "Oh, phew," Jett said, bending down to look at the cake and liquids. She decided that they were probably some type of potion, but she couldn't place what they would do.

She instepected the bottle of liquid, and shrugged. "They seem fine," Jett said. "Might as well see what they put in here," she added, unzipping her backpack. The tribute wondered what was in the pack, considering that she hadn't looked yet. Oh, okay" Jett said, looking at the things. She decided to listen to Pyrite, after all they most likely had food in the picnic basket.

Pyrite finds the picnic basket to contain two forks, two plates, two spoons, and 2 bowls. The only food it has are two pieces of candy. Jett's backpack has a small thermos of what looks to be tea and some rainbow glitter. The butterfly swoops down again and sprinkles glittery dust over the two with it's wings, then reaches down to take a small nibble of the cake as if to show it is safe, and suffers no apparent side affects.

Jett looks at the thermos and rainbow glitter briefly, then puts the two items back in her pack. She then feels things in her hair, and realizes it's the butterfly again. Glitter and all, it seemed that the cake and liquid weren't poison. "Hm, should we just take them along?" Jett suggested, watching the butterfly.

She guessed that either the things were gifts from the gamemaker, or the butterfly wasn't supposed to show any side effects. Maybe it would be useful in days to come. It was also possible that the liquid would give the tributes super powers or something. The possibilities were endless really. "It couldn't hurt, I mean, maybe we can use it to lure in other tributes," Jett suggested.

Pyrite sighed at the meagre pickings. A set of cutlery and 2 pieces of candy. But tea! He loved tea. Tea was a good thing. He offered Jett a fork with a cheeky grin.

"Perhaps you can use it to eat the cake!"

She smiled back, ever so slightly. He picked up the cake and put it in his picnic basket. Perhaps later he could taste a little bit, just to check. He took the blue liquid too. Who knew what THAT did. He took one of the pieces of candy and summoned the almighty forces of wrath which he possessed... to snap it in half. He placed one half in his mouth and offered the other to Jett.

"May as well do something to take your mind off our impending deaths."

It was relatively true, too. At least one of them had to die. The other one might make it out though. Who knew? He was about ready to get set off again. It was just a matter of waiting for Jett. He couldn't leave her behind. All of a sudden he remembered their angle. He tried to pull off a long of longing, as though he wished she could be in his arms back home in Six. Honestly, he wouldn't mind being in anyone's arms right now. He was scared. Genuinely. He tried to suppress his fear and carry on, but he still had to wait for Jett.

Suddenly, the butterfly, seemingly angry that they haven't eaten the cake or the liquid, expands in size and grows fangs. It lunges towards Jett and latches its teeth into her arm, sucking out blood as fast as it can. The butterfly mutt's powerful wings flap harshly, sending Pyrite back a few steps as if warning him not to interfere.

The butterfly mutt has 60 HP. Damage goes to Jett.

Jett smiled and rolled her eyes. "Ha ha, you're so funny," she said with a sarcastic tone. She was about to take the other half of the candy when the butterfly began growing in size, gaining fangs. This is what she had been scared about. With her knife in hand, she tried to push it away to block it's attack, and then tried to stab it's thorax area.

Jett didn't know a lot about butterflies, but they had to die easily, right? After all, they were pretty much just wings and a tiny body.

He heard the butterfly before he saw it. As it dramatically grew in size it let out a small shrill cry and lunged immediately for Jett. It sent out what felt like a supersonic boom to his chest, knocking him back a good few metres. He saw her take a hit, though she managed to get a stab to it. He had two axes rather than one knife though, and chose to use them to full effect. He ran forward swinging viciously, first with his right arm, then with his left, hoping to take down the mutt quickly and move on. He wondered why the butterfly had taken such great offence to us not eating the cake.

The butterfly charges forward and attack Pyrite, angry at being attacked. It now has 30 HP.

Jett felt the butterfly's fangs sink into her skin, making a deep wound. Pain blazed all over her, and she felt like she was on fire. The tribute realized that the butterfly was attacking Pyrite now, and she tried to block it's attack on him.

Jett then tried to hit the butterfly again. She was getting seriously angry with the bug. Who would've thought that bugs get so worked up when you don't take what they give you right away? She still felt pain in her arm, and hoped that she could recover from her injury soon.

Pyrite wasn't particularly impressed with the butterfly. Surely the Gamemakers could have done better. Ah well, it was still relatively dangerous. He saw the mutt coming at him and saw Jett try and fail to block its attack. He brought his axes up, trying to block the attack that was still coming his way, before swinging at its thorax. It was going down, and there was no way he could stop it. However, the one thing he wanted now has a medical kit. He wanted to immediately get Jett back to full strength and keep her that way.

Because for some reason he didn't want to see her get hurt.

The butterfly withers and dies, but not before bursting into a rainbow flame. The flowers are quickly enveloped in fire and the tributes will be next if they don't get out now.

Jett wasn't going to hesitate to run from the rainbow fire. It seemed that the whole fire would take the whole hillside, and them if they weren't careful. "Oh my god!" she screamed, jumping up to her feet. "Come on!" the tribute said, grabbing Pyrite's wrist. She slung her backpack over her shoulder and went off running.

They would have to run somewhere else, because this place obviously wasn't going to be safe for much longer. Jett hoped that the fire wouldn't consume the whole valley, but something told her that they wouldn't want to spend the night here at the valley. They would have to find a different spot.

It looked like something straight out of a twisted Capitol comedy. Pyrite was running, Jett's arm around his waist, and a picnic basket in his hand with an axe in the other and his second axe tucked in the picnic basket. The flames were hypnotising, he wanted to turn around and stare at them. He kept running, trying to keep up with Jett, before they eventually burst out of the trees. They were stood face to face with a vast lake, with several... wait... mermaids? Several... mermaids perched in the centre. He tried to stay as far away from the mermaids as possible while not going back into the forest. This was strange.

Pyrite thought it might be a good idea for one of them to try and get some rest. He handed Jett the blanket and tried to find a comfortable spot to place it. Eventually he saw a cushiony area and put the blanket down there, assuming the guard role. He looked at her short knife which now had a small amount of butterfly liquid on it. Not the prettiest of sights.
He decided the guard role wasn't totally for him and he sat beside Jett, trying to think of anything but the other tributes around the arena.

(Pyrite and Jett have left the Rapunzel Ruins.)
