Lupa and Alexavier
Part One: The ReapingsLupa AvianReaping Day. Every year, it was the same reaction. Mother, expression for once blank as she dressed her children in their stolen clothes. Storm, hands shaking as he recalled just how many times his sister’s name was in the bowl, not even concerned about his own. And Lupa, face as empty as always, to spare her family the image of her anxiety. The long walk to the center of town was silent. After the previous years, the Avian family had no right to hope.
District Nine was packed, as usual. Lupa’s fifteen years of age put her in the middle of the pack, far away from Storm’s group of Thirteens. That had always been the hardest part, breaking off from her brother when they needed each other most. It was only a matter of time before the first name was drawn. If it was his, Lupa wouldn’t know what to do.
The name did not belong to her brother. But it was an Avian. Lupa Avian, to be exact. The girl closed her eyes, the only break from her mask. One of them had to’ve been named, as poor and troublesome as they were. Good thing it was the older sibling. She took to the stage, giving the escort a blank stare, which was then turned on the audience. No volunteers, naturally. They couldn’t keep saving her life, that of a street rat, could they? Xav would’ve cursed him then and there if he didn’t have a sliver of hope left. A sliver that faded quickly as the seconds wore on. Will had broken his word, it seemed. Too bad.
