District 1 Reapings!

The District 1 escort steps up on stage and smiles with blindingly white teeth. She starts speaking in a high pitched voice, "Welcome everyone to the Reapings! Today one young man and woman will be chosen to participate in the 28th Annual Hunger Games!" She steps up to the big bowls containing the names of every child in the district, from 12 to 18. Her hands hover above the bowls for a second, as if deciding something. "Now then, Ladies first!" she says, and reaches into the bowl filled with girls names...

sagittaria finaly arrived. this was the only event that she would ever show up to.

.:The two tributes "Natalie Wilson" and "James Xior" had been chosen for slaughter, all that would be left would be to cart them off for their grand appearance in the Capitol. "Now then, are there any volunteers?" The escort asked as their two tributes joined them, on stage.

Kaspar wasn't nervous this year. You were only nervous when you could still do something about it. He was resigned to the fact that he was going to the Games, maybe even a little relieved deep down. At least he would be away from Rolf. The old man was skirting the edge of the adults section, his eyes fixed on Kaspar's head. It felt as though the gaze was drilling into his skull, commanding him to take his place on the podium.

A hush fell over the crowd and all that could be heard was the cool wind and the flags above the Justice Building snapping. The announcer's voice sound abnormally loud in the silence. "...Now then, Ladies first!" Kaspar's heart began to pound despite his resignation and he could feel a flush rising through his body. This was it. The point of no return. If he didn't get chosen now he would be going up on that stage as a volunteer. A real Career he thought wryly.

"James Xior."

Not him, not him, but his body was tensed as if for flight. Waiting for those words. "Now then, are there any volunteers?" Kaspar wasn't sure if he made the conscious decision to move his body, but he was striding forward, one arm raised.

"I will. I volunteer."

My name. Reaped. Should i take it? She wondered. Then she thought about her friends. How could she have a chance? She looked at the other children with desperation in her eyes and she mounred the stage. Please let there be a volunteer...

"I volunteer!" I shout, as I step onto the red carpet put in the middle. I put a serious strong look, gonna need sponsors. Snow Blue, victor of the 28th Hunger Games, I can imagine it now.

I whispered "Thank you," quietly and started to turn away from the stage.
I was okay. saved. for this year, at least. My family would be safe fro another year. I wipe my misty eyes carefully, too.

I take the stage and stand next to my district partner. I make a big sparkling white smile to the camera, one that could win over anybody. "Hi, Kasper."

He kept his eyes firmly focused on a point above the heads of the crowds, directly into the lenses of the cameras. Even James' whispered good luck didn't extract a reaction from him. They might not be killing each other, but the Games had already started.

Snow stepped out of the crowd, her face set determinedly. It seemed volunteering was a popular option in District One this year. She plastered a gleaming smile on her face as she joined him on the stage, obviously just as aware as he was that making an impression was what counted now. Not that she would have a lot of trouble winning over sponsors with her looks. Add to that the fact that she was obviously a trained career, being a volunteer from District One and you (nearly) had a winning combination. It would be a winner except she was facing off against Kaspar and he didn't intend to lose.

"Hey Snow."

His lips barely moved and the whisper was intended for just the two of them. He might be planning to win, but that didn't mean allies wouldn't help. And that meant being polite.

Just don't ask him to be nice.

It was time to walk in the rooms to see our family. I walked beside him as we left the large crowd. "So are you a career?" She wanted to know if this man will be in the career pack.

"I volunteered. You're either suicidal or a career if you volunteer and I'm not suicidal."

Kaspar's pace was quick, wanting to get away from the cameras and into the rooms, to get this part of the process over with. He didn't need to see his family and they wouldn't be coming. He'd said his goodbyes earlier, a hidden advantage of knowing you were entering the Games. He didn't deign to ask Snow if she was a career. She'd volunteered as well.

The creaking of the stage was replaced with the soft pad of a plush carpet, a corridor closing in on them like the walls of a cell. The last sight of sky and District One disappeared rapidly behind them, a part of their life that they'd do better to forget. Until the Games finished they didn't have a home. Doors flashed by them as they were marched through the building by peacekeepers, until they came to an abrupt halt in front of two identical doors.

"See you on the train, I guess" he said.

Kaspar shot Snow a short smile and waited as the peacekeepers thrust open the doors, one for each of us.
