Jessica officially hated the Hunger Games. She couldn't watch her older sister, Jett, fight in them anymore. It hurt. The girl didn't know how Jett could handle losing her partner, and the person she supposedly 'loved', even though Jess had thought that to be someone else in the District. The girl slid her hands into the pockets of her jacket, tightly wrapped around her. It was a crisp day, and Jessica was already sick of it.

She had been sick of everything lately. Food, people, breathing, it all seemed stupid and annoying. Jessica hadn't had an appetite lately, and you could tell she was skinnier than usual. Her family let her not eat, simply because they didn't want her freaking out more than she already seemed to be.

Jessica had escaped the viewing room, where everyone was intently watching Jett and other tributes. The girl didn't want to watch anymore, it only made her want to throw up the little amount of food she had bothered to eat. On her way out, she ran into someone. "Uh, sorry," Jess muttered, not really focusing on walking.

Darryl took a step backwards, absorbing the soft blow from the girl stood before him. He didn't think he'd see anyone outside the viewing area, but he had nothing left to watch. "It's no bother. I'm Darryl, by the way. Nice to meet you."
She looked like the girl in the arena, the one his cousin had been with before he'd died. He choked back a tear, it still ate away at him. The first time he knew of his cousin was his last.

He smiled gently in the direction of the girl, with her hands in her jacket. She had just left the room where everyone was watching the Games intently. He pulled the arms of his light blue hooded jacket over his hands, before shoving them into the pockets of his jeans. They'd been a present for his birthday. They cost a lot, and 'a lot' didn't describe their money. He looked back over to her, forgetting he hadn't even bothered to ask her name. "And you are?"

Jessica gave him a confused look and nodded briefly. It seemed that she wasn't the only one who didn't want to watch the Hunger Games any longer. Then again, Jess never wanted to watch. Seeing her sister in them, only made it that much harder. The boy introduced himself as Darryl, and she gave him a small smile. "Yeah, nice to meet you too," Jess said softly.

The girl noticed his smile and felt compelled to return it for a little longer. She felt the wind pecked at her face, but didn't mind the cold. Jessica didn't mind the cold, she minded things that tore families apart, like the Games. Hearing the boy's voice again, Jess perked up. "Jessica Briggs," she said softly, glancing at the screen for a moment. Oh Jett..." she thought miserably. Turning her hazel eyes back to him, she waited for a reaction.

And with that, Darryl's suspicions were confirmed. This girl was Jett's sister. He sat in a relatively comfortable chair and gestured for Jess to sit down, which she did. He wanted to ask about Jett, what she was like, everything, if only to know who Pyrite was with in the arena. But he restrained his questions for a later date when perhaps it would be less inconsiderate to ask. For now he just sat and thought in solitude where he could think about the Games and hope Jett could make it home, for Jessica, at least.

He looked up and with very little pause for thought asked the girl if she wanted to go somewhere more quiet to talk. Gruesome scenes could be heard from the speakers and he wanted to just leave.

Jessica sat down, crossing her ankles and looking at the ground. Scenes from the Games could be heard even outside of the room, creating vivid images in her mind. Just the sounds made her skin crawl. "If you wanted to talk, I don't think here is the place," Jess said softly, turning her gaze back to Darryl. She stood up from her chair and looked at the video once last time before looking at the pathway out of the justice building.

The girl waited for him to respond. If he didn't want to come with her, she understood. Jess, however, wasn't staying within a hundred feet of this place.

Darryl saw her standing and left his chair to catch up to her. Leaving the dreary building full of the sound of death behind them, he saw just how many people had gone to watch it. The path he was walking down, normally littered with the footprints of passing commuters was deserted. He squinted at the sun after leaving the dark building, having to bring up a hand to block it out. Eventually they reached a small park bench where they could talk in peace. He turned to her and smiled weakly, happy to be rid of the dark room behind.

He forced out words that didn't need saying, as he knew the answer already.

"You're Jett's sister, aren't you? I'm so sorry."

And with that he buried his head in his hands, and let the burdens of the past few weeks drown him in sorrow.

Jessica followed him out of the way, looking at the pathway and it's lack of people. Usually, if it wasn't the games, this path would have kids, adults, and sales people on it. As she boots made imprints in the sand, Jess watched the pathway, looking for anyone else. Hearing Darryl's voice break the icy silence, she stopped in her tracks.

She bit her cheek, but nodded. "Yeah," Jessica replied slowly, her gaze on the ground. "I'm sorry too," she said quietly, before she noticed Darryl with his face in his hands.

Her face shifted into concern as she did her next move. It was something she had been doing a lot of lately. Jess wrapped her arms around the boy she hadn't known for more than five minutes and began to cry too. Everything had been so stressful and dramatic, she just couldn't take it anymore.

Darryl felt the girl's warm embrace send a shot through his spine, making him feel somewhat numb. He pretty much buried himself in her shoulder, quietly sobbing as he wrapped his arms around her. And for a few moments, he was at peace. He felt calm, and his mind was adrift in the eye of the storm, the calm epicentre before he had to let go and face the harsh reality again. He smiled in her hug, before letting go and smiling slightly.

"I probably needed that."

He was searching for anything to take his mind of the Games, and chose small talk as the route to go down. The weather wasn't that interesting, so it could be instantly dismissed.

"So, is there anything in particular you like to do out and about? I don't think I've seen you that much before."
