Day 2 of a New Life

Subject: Day 2 of a New Life Sun May 26, 2013 12:50 pm

I wake up next to Joseph. I am glad that this wasn't a dream. I then get worked up. What would happen if the Capitol take him away? What of they take me away? Worst of all, what if we were forced to fight to the death? Thinking about this makes me panic and I start to cry. I just hope that Joseph doesn't hear me worrying.

During the night,I had woken up from a strange noise.I had walked into Melody's room,only to find her shaking in her bed.I had lied down next to her and had held her till she slept again.It wasn't long before I was asleep too.I woke up again after a while to the sound of the girl crying.I had learned to recognise the sound and it shook me awake immediatelly.And there she was,crying with her face in her hands.I wrapped my arms around her shoulders and pulled her closer to me,kissing the top of her head and rubbing her back soothingly.

I feel bad. I woke Joseph up, and for a stupid reason.

"Sorry for waking you up. I was worrying about the next reaping. I don't want to lose you." If Joseph goes in, I can't volunteer for him.

I smiled and shook my head,hugging her tighter.Poor creature,she had just lost her mother and sister.Yet,she was worrying about me and the future.I didn't even want to think about what would happen if she was chosen.I would volunteer to protect her?But I couldn't,boys were first.I sighed and kissed her head again,trying to make these miserable thoughts go away.

I hug Joseph and try to take my worries away. I get up and I tell Joseph that I am going to go get breakfast for us as I head downstairs to get some food.

I nodded and stared at her as she walked away.I then got up and looked around the room.It was pretty and warm,like the girl who lived in it.There was a small plant on her bedside table and it looked like a rose.Propably a gift from her family,or a fan.I wished I could have my tongue back so i could speak to her.But it was okay,she didn't care.

I come back in with some toast and cheese. I sit down and placed the plate between us. I then quietly begin to eat it whilst looking down. I still haven't quite recovered from my worries. I only lost my sister and my Mum 2 days ago.

I noticed she was sad and let my toast down before squeezing her hand.I smiled nervously and raised her head from her chin,gently placing a kiss on her lips.I pulled away and blushed as I continued eating my food.

I see my Dad walk in. He is weirdly quite cheerful. Until he see's my face. He must have seen that I was crying.

"Melody, what's wrong?" he asked. "What happens if Joseph gets chose? I can't volunteer to protect him, simply because girls go first." I would sacrifice myself for Joseph, if I got the option.

I love how he was being protective of me. Then I think of Grace. She would have done anything for me, and because she tried to protect me, she died in the hands of the Capitol. "Well, lets just hope that it doesn't come down to that. I would hate to lose you both." I hear my Dad say. He was right. He would be the one who suffered the most from this.

"Oh Joseph, I love you." That was the first time I had heard Dad say that. Joseph was now officially in our family. I run over and join the hug.

"How about we go out today and get some food?" That was a good idea. When I went to get breakfast, we were running out of food. I looked to Joseph to see what he thought.

I shook my head and pointed at me.I then pointed at both of them and the floor.They should spent some time together,they had only each other in the world.And food was one of my specialties.So,why not?

If that is what Joseph think is best, I trust him. "I'll be waiting for you." I say, smiling. I quickly kiss him on the cheek and look him in the eyes.

As soon as he left, I went right outside my door and sat down. I didn't explain to my Dad why I was doing that. He did ask me though.

"Melody, what are you doing?" he asked. My reply was simple. "Well, I told Joseph that I would be waiting for him. So I am. Out here. And I'm not moving until he is back." My Dad nodded and went back inside. I just waited quietly, thinking about Joseph.

I returned as soon as I could with some paper bags under my arms.I saw Mel standing at the doorstep,looking like she waited for something.I sat down next to her and looked at her worried,moving some hair behind her ear.

I realised that Joseph was next to me. I must have been in a daydream. "Hey, I've been waiting for you since you left," I say with a smile. I kiss Joseph on the cheek and lead him back inside to start packing.
